Nationally ranked Myers Park is the 2013-14 Observer Sweet 16 girls’ basketball champion.
The Mustangs (30-1) led wire-to-wire, losing only to Blackman (Tenn), the top-ranked team in several national polls. The Mustangs had been nationally ranked in each of the past three seasons but failed to get to the state championship round.
This season, second-year coach Barbara Nelson pushed her team to the regionals and to the state championship. Once there, the Mustangs blew out Southeast Raleigh 61-46 at N.C. State’s Reynolds Coliseum in a game that wasn’t as close as the score.
N.C. 4A Western Regional runner-up Ardrey Kell was the in-state team that gave Myers Park the most trouble, losing several close games to the state champ. The Knights finished second, ahead of five-time private school state champ Providence Day.
The Observer begins its annual postseason basketball awards Wednesday. Coming up:
Thursday: Boys’ Sweet 16
Friday: All-Region team announced
Saturday: All-Mecklenburg team announced
Sunday: All-Observer teams announced with Mr. and Ms. Basketball in North and South Carolina
