Two major-college recruits are the Charlotte Observer All-Region boys and girls players of the year for the 2013-14 season.
Weddington’s Stephanie Watts, a junior North Carolina commit, repeats as girls All-Region player of the year. Shelby’s Gabe DeVoe, a senior Clemson recruit, is the boys player of the year.
The awards signify Watts and DeVoe as the top girls and boys players in the Observer’s coverage area outside of Mecklenburg County, comprised of nearly 100 schools in western North Carolina and York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina. Players had to be nominated by their coach to be considered for the All-Region team.
The boys coach of the year is Casey Rogers, who led his team to a 31-1 record and an N.C. 3A state championship, matching one he won as a player at Freedom in 1998. Rogers was also named N.C. Associated Press coach of the year.
The girls coach of the year is Bandys’ Kyle Moretz, who led his team to a 31-1 season and an N.C. 2A state finals appearance. Moretz was in his first season.
