Charlotte Catholic beat Providence Day 35-23 Saturday and made a big jump up the Observer’s Sweet 16 high school football poll that measures the top teams in the newspaper’s coverage area.
Catholic moved from No. 12 to a tie for eighth in the poll, which has three ties and 17 teams this week. Rock Hill Northwestern was down 30-6 Friday to S.C. 4A power Byrnes but rallied before losing 30-22. The Trojans dipped from No. 3 to No. 10. Catholic will face Northwestern at home Friday night.
Charlotte Christian, which lost Thursday to No. 1 Mallard Creek, jumped two spots after leading the Mavericks for a good portion of the game and playing the reigning N.C. 4AA champs to a standstill at times.
Also moving this week were York (No. 16 to No. 12) and Mooresville (No. 13 to No. 11). One team entered the poll: 3A Statesville at No. 16.
