Vance High’s Cougars make a big jump in this week’s Sweet 16.
Vance bolted up six spots to No. 10 after a narrow loss at Richmond Senior two weeks ago and a dominant 28-7 win Friday at Rock Hill South Pointe. South Pointe fell out of the poll after it was ranked No. 10 last week.
Under new coach Aaron Brand, Vance is averaging more than 40 points per game and looks like it could challenge Mallard Creek for the MECKA 8 4A championship. Vance will play at Mallard Creek on Oct. 17.
Two new teams are in the poll this week. Unbeaten Weddington, off to its best start since 2010, is in at No. 12. Rocky River, which began the year in the poll but has dealt with injury, is back at No. 16.
