The Concord Spiders are half a game away from clinching an undefeated season in the South Piedmont 3A Conference.
Their game at Northwest Cabarrus Friday was postponed at halftime with the Spiders (10-0 overall, 7-0 conference) ahead 29-0. It will resume Monday at 7 p.m. at Northwest Cabarrus (1-8, 0-6).
Ticket stubs from Friday’s game will be honored Monday as the teams continue play to start the third quarter.
The second-half kickoff was seconds away when game officials spotted lightning and ordered the teams off the field. A heavy rain quickly followed and play was called about 30 minutes later.
Never miss a local story.
In the first half, Concord all-state running back Rocky Reid rushed for just 12 yards on three carries which best explains how mismatched the Trojans were.
Reid, Cabarrus County’s all-time leading rusher, played just one series and helped Concord to a 7-0 lead.
The senior surpassed 2,000 yards rushing on the season on his first carry, a 7-yard gain. It appeared that the Concord coaches decided to rest Reid and that he was not injured.
Junior quarterback Keenan Black, who threw for 82 yards on 8-13 passing, led the Spiders’ first touchdown drive, connecting on all four of his pass attempts for 52 yards.
The drive covered just 55 yards, but Concord lost 20 yards on three penalties. Jadon Dodson covered the final 17 yards when he caught an inside screen and sidestepped tacklers while zipping through the middle of the field to the endzone.
Carter Mozingo gave Concord a short field later in the first quarter with a 74-yard punt return to Northwest’s 3-yard line. Two Trojans’ penalties at the end of the play gave Concord a first-and-goal at the 1.
On the next play, reserve running back Haywood Forte scored the first of his two first half touchdowns while following a big hole to the right.
Forte’s 49-yard dash to the Northwest 12 on the first play of Concord’s next possession set up the Spiders’ second score. Black plowed in from the 2 for a 22-0 lead with nine minutes, 30 seconds left in the second quarter.
Forte and fellow running back Avery Williams covered all but five yards on a 61-yard scoring drive late in the half. Williams had three runs for 22 yards and Forte covered 35 yards, including 16 on a swing pass to Northwest’s 32.
A 7-yard scoring run by Forte on first-and-goal increased the Spiders’ lead to 29-0 with just under two minutes left. Forte had 95 yards on nine carries.
Concord held Northwest to minus-8 yards including minus-14 rushing. Linemen Mike Baker and Tucker Wall led the Spiders’ defensive push.
Northwest gained two first downs in the first half. One came on Kalan Chapman’s quarterback sneak on fourth-and-one at his own 40. The other was a result of a Concord roughing the passer penalty that helped the Trojans cross midfield for the only time.
Concord, ranked seventh in The Sweet 16, finishes the regular season with a home game against Garinger on Friday. Northwest Cabarrus, which has a seven-game losing streak, hosts Central Cabarrus next week.
