Zion Williamson entered rare company when he was made the cover boy of Slam Magazine, a popular publication dedicated to basketball.
Past high school players to make the cover include LeBron James, O.J. Mayo, Charlotte Hornet Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Duke’s Austin Rivers.
Williamson, a 6-foot-7 junior, appears alone on the cover, with captions like “He’s 16. He’s 6-7. He’s explosive like Russ (Westbrook). He dunks like LeBron.”
Williamson became an internet sensation this year, primarily for his dunking wizardry. After nearly every game, Twitter and Instagram would be buzzing over his latest moves. Williamson also led Spartanburg Day to its second straight state championship and was named to several All-American teams. He averaged 37 points and 13 rebounds last season and is being hotly recruited by in-state schools like Duke and North Carolina and out-of-state schools like Kentucky, Florida and UCLA.
