Dale Earnhardt Jr. launches Twitter account after Daytona 500 win

Dale Earnhardt Jr. picks up more than 300,000 fans overnight after first tweets, including a “selfie” in front of a statue of Dale Earnhardt, his father.

Dale Earnrhardt Jr. celebrated his Daytona 500 victory by launching his Twitter account.

The race finished just before midnight. He had promised to start using Twitter if he won the Daytona 500.

Sometime after 2 a.m., under the handle ‏@ DaleJr, he tweeted: “Tonight seemed like as good a night as any to join Twitter. How is everyone doin?”

By 9:30 a.m., he had more than 300,000 followers and was gaining more quickly.

This morning, he tweeted: “Up doing interviews at Daytona 500 Experience. Gonna be an interesting week.”

Then, he sent out a “selfie” in front of a statue of his father:

“Look who I ran into at the Daytona Experience. Dad's Happy!”
