NASCAR Today: Knights host Waltrip, Logano

Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip and 2009 Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year Joey Logano will throw out ceremonial first pitches before the Charlotte Knights’ game.

There will be a mix of auto racing and baseball Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte’s uptown.

Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip and 2009 Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year Joey Logano will throw out ceremonial first pitches before the Charlotte Knights’ 7 p.m. baseball game against the Norfolk Tides.

The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive Joey Logano Foundation racing calendars.

Open house: Michael Waltrip Racing will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the team’s headquarters, 20310 Chartwell Center Drive in Cornelius. That’s off I-77 at Exit 28.

Fans can tour the shop, get autographs from drivers, and enjoy live music and free food. The autograph-signing schedule: Jeff Burton, 11 a.m.-noon; Clint Bowyer, noon-1 p.m.; and Michael Waltrip, 1-2 p.m.

Appearances: Sprint Cup driver Aric Almirola will be at Sugar Creek Charter School for an afternoon of fun, including games, Nathan’s hot dogs, and giveaways. The event, which is open to the public, is from 3:15 to 6:15 p.m. at the school, 4101 North Tryon St.

Team owner Richard Childress and drivers Ty Dillon and Austin Dillon are scheduled to appear and sign autographs at 6 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops in Concord Mills Mall.
