The Carolina Panthers have been busy Friday, making the same type of below-the-radar moves that panned out in Dave Gettleman's first year as general manager.
Carolina has signed free agent cornerback Antoine Cason, the team announced Friday. Cason's agreement comes on the same day the Panthers landed free agent wide receiver Tiquan Underwood.
“These are players who have an opportunity to play a role with our football team,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a release. “I have experience with Antoine and look forward to working with him again. Tiquan has the kind of speed that helps any team and has shown good progress as a receiver.”
Cason, 27, is reunited with Rivera and secondary coach Steve Wilks, who were on San Diego's staff when Cason was a starter with the Chargers.
Cason couldn't crack the starting lineup last year in his only season with Arizona, where former Colts corner Jerraud Powers beat him out for the spot opposite Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson.
The Panthers hope Cason can find the form he showed in San Diego, when he had 17 pass breakups in both 2010 and 2011.
The knock on Cason is his speed. In a Week 5 win against the Panthers, Cason recovered a Cam Newton fumble, but the Panthers quarterback chased him down to prevent a touchdown.
