Height: 6-0 Weight: 204 pounds
College: North Carolina
What he offers: Despite his smallish size, Boston led the Tar Heels with 85 tackles and five interceptions last season. Boston is a good tackler, finishing with a season-high 15 stops against Duke. But he lacks instincts in coverage and was beaten repeatedly at UNC.
Why he fits: The Panthers signed free agent safeties Thomas DeCoud and Roman Harper, but needed depth after moving Charles Godfrey to cornerback. Boston can play both safety spots, but his aggressive mentality and lean frame make him better suited for playing on the back end. He should contribute to special teams immediately.
Worth mentioning: Boston finished his UNC career with 13 interceptions, and was a second-team All-ACC selection in 2013.
Bet you didn’t know: His full name is Jayestin Tre’von Boston. ... Went to North Fort Myers High in Florida, the same school Deion Sanders attended. ... Wore No. 10 for the Tar Heels so he could say “Bos-ten.”
What they’re saying: “Converted cornerback and free/strong safety tweener whose inconsistent play and questionable physicality will turn teams off. Will have to turn heads on special teams to have longevity as a backup.” – Draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki.
