Carolina Panthers kick returner Kealoha Pilares sat out Friday’s light practice with an ankle issue, and his status for Sunday’s exhibition against the Kansas City Chiefs is uncertain.

Pilares has missed all or parts of the past two seasons because of injuries, but was given the first shot at returning kicks against the Bills.

•  Outside linebacker Chase Blackburn will miss Sunday’s game with a back injury that is not believed to be serious. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said an MRI exam on Blackburn revealed no significant damage.
•  Second-year guard Edmund Kugbila’s spinal surgery last week in New York went well, according to Rivera. Kugbila, a fourth-round pick in 2013, is on injured reserve for the second year in a row.
