It was Food Truck Thursday outside Bank of America Stadium on Thursday – courtesy of Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera.
Rivera paid to have three food trucks come to the stadium for lunch, including quarterback Cam Newton’s Smokn’ Aces. Rivera didn’t commit to making the movable feasts a weekly tradition. It might depend on how the Panthers play Sunday against San Francisco.
“They wanted to try to do something a little bit different for the players,” Rivera said. “It seems to be a nice little treat, so we’ll see how it goes.”
Newton, who is a pescatarian, recently launched his food truck with a hometown friend. It features shrimp and chicken items. Rivera gave the shrimp po-boy a thumbs up.
Newton called it a “side project” that he hopes will allow him to interact with more people in Charlotte.
“I have proper people taking care of that (business) side,” Newton said. “Yes, I have a pretty face on the truck. But none of that is run if I don’t do my job.”
Fullback Mike Tolbert was looking forward to trying the chicken wings.
“He’s from Georgia, I’m from Georgia,” Tolbert said of Newton. “I know what Georgia food tastes like, so it’s going to be good.”
