In moves that could signal they plan to look for more outside help at the position, the Panthers cut wide receivers Brenton Bersin and Mike Brown on Saturday, according to a league source.
Bersin, a Charlotte native and former Wofford standout, played in 15 games last season, catching 13 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. He and Panthers owner Jerry Richardson are the only Wofford alumni to play in an NFL game.
Bersin had a good camp and caught four passes in the exhibition finale at Pittsburgh. But the arrival of former Seahawks wideout Kevin Norwood in a trade this week might have hastened Bersin's departure.
The Observer reported earlier this week the Panthers plan to be active on the waiver wire to boost a receiving position that has been plagued by injuries and dropped passes.
Undrafted rookie running back Brandon Wegher, a fan favorite after his three-touchdown preseason, made the final roster, according to a source.
The Panthers also released tight end Marcus Lucas, according to a league source. Lucas had transitioned from wide receiver during the offseason and caught a touchdown against the Steelers on Thursday night.
Brown, who caught 32 passes in 2013 for Jacksonville, was an offseason addition who spent most of the preseason working with the second- and third-team offenses.
Carolina also kept undrafted rookie safety Dean Marlowe. With injuries in the defensive backfield and possible interest Marlowe would generate from other teams, the Panthers decided to keep the former James Madison standout on the final roster rather than expose him to the special squad.
