One of the Carolina Panthers’ fan favorites has a spot on the final roster.
Carolina informed undrafted rookie running back Brandon Wegher that he’s on the final 53-man roster, according to a source, after he totaled 157 yards and three touchdowns this preseason.
Wegher, who made the team after spring’s rookie minicamp, worked his way from the bottom of the running back depth chart at the start of training camp onto the final roster.
Wegher scored the game-winning touchdown against Buffalo on a 42-yard pass in the first exhibition. He followed that up the next week with the game-winning touchdown against the Dolphins in his two-score game.
Thursday against the Steelers he showed great vision and the ability to bounce and cut back and he rushed 17 times for 64 yards in the victory.
Wegher has overcome a lot in his life. He went through three school changes, multiple arrests and the birth of his child. He now has a roster spot for Week 1 of the 2015 NFL season.
It’s unclear how many running backs Carolina will retain. Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert and Cameron Artis-Payne are locks to make the team. Fozzy Whittaker is also likely safe, but the future of Jordan Todman on the team is still in the air.
