The Charlotte Checkers’ troubles away from home continued as they ran their road winless streak to a franchise-worst seven games, getting shut out 3-0 by Yann Danis and the Norfolk Admirals.
Though Charlotte outshot Norfolk 15-5 in the first period, the Admirals scored first. A strange bounce off the end boards led to the puck sliding back at the legs of unsuspecting goaltender John Muse, who unknowingly pushed the puck over the goal line to put Norfolk ahead.
The tables were turned for the second period, as the Checkers could not get anything going, registering only four shots on goal to the Admirals’ 10. Neither team could convert, and Charlotte went into the third period down just one goal.
But Mat Clark extended Norfolk’s lead less than five minutes into the third period, and Max Friberg added an insurance goal late to seal a 3-0 victory for Norfolk.
The power play was once again ineffective for Charlotte, failing to convert on any of the season-high eight opportunities they were given. The Checkers’ power-play unit now has one goal in its last 30 man advantages.
Muse, in his first start since the Admirals peppered him with 50 shots en route to an overtime victory, turned in a solid outing in finishing with 21 saves, keeping his team in a position to win throughout.
The Checkers will now fly to Texas for back-to-back tilts with the defending Calder Cup champion Stars on Friday and Saturday before returning to Charlotte to begin a four-game home stand, starting on Tuesday with a matchup against Oklahoma City.
