The Wells Fargo Championship will remain at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club through 2019, the Observer has confirmed.
The PGA Tour will announce the five-year extension Tuesday, with the additional news that the tournament will be played at Wilmington’s Eagle Point Golf Club in 2017 – the year the PGA Championship is set for Quail Hollow.
Because of instability in the banking industry (Wachovia was once the tournament’s primary sponsor), there was doubt a few years ago that the Wells Fargo tournament would remain in Charlotte after last spring’s event.
The tournament, which has been played at Quail Hollow since 2003, routinely sells out and has become one of the top events on the PGA Tour that’s not a major. Former winners include Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler. Last year’s tournament produced one of the season’s surprise winners in rookie Derek Ernst.
The tournament has also contributed $14.8 million to charity through primary beneficiary Teach For America.
The move to Wilmington’s Eagle Point allows the PGA Championship to be played at Quail Hollow in 2017. Charlotte Country Club and Atlanta’s East Lake Country Club were among the other sites considered for the ’17 Wells Fargo tournament.
Quail Hollow underwent several changes after the 2014 Wells Fargo event to better position itself for future tournaments and the PGA Championship. Key changes were centered on Quail Hollow’s “Green Mile” finishing holes and include a transition to MiniVerde Bermuda grass greens and a drastic change to the 16th hole.
