The Wells Fargo Championship’s 2015 dates have been temporarily moved to May 14-17 to accommodate a scheduling change for the PGA Tour’s World Golf Championships Match Play.
“The tour asked if we could help out and we were happy to,” said Kym Hougham, executive director of the Wells Fargo, which is played every May at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club.
The Match Play, which is usually in February, will for one year take Wells Fargo’s traditional first weekend of May. It is unclear when the Match Play, which will take place at San Francisco’s Harding Park municipal course April 29-May 3 2015, will be scheduled in future years.
The switch means the Wells Fargo will be played the week after the Players Championship, the tour’s most prestigious non-major tournament, rather than the week before the Players as it has since 2007.
Hougham said he didn’t expect the change to adversely affect the Wells Fargo’s field.
“It just means there are going to be three great weeks of golf – the Match Play, the Players, the Wells Fargo – leading up to the U.S. Open,” said Hougham.
The change also lands the Wells Fargo in the middle of Charlotte’s NASCAR speed weeks. The Sprint All-Star race will likely be scheduled for May 16 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Hougham said the tournament will return to its early May date in 2016. The 2017 Wells Fargo will be played at Wilmington’s Eagle Point Golf Club as Quail Hollow prepares to host that year’s PGA Championship.
