The UNC Charlotte women’s soccer team used a stifling defense to shut out Winthrop 4-0 on Wednesday night in Charlotte. The 49ers improve to 2-3-1, while the Eagles fell to 3-2.

Charlotte’s new United Soccer Leagues Pro franchise – the Independence – was officially introduced Wednesday in uptown Charlotte. In front of a crowd of about 250 supporters, many of whom wore black and white Independence scarves, team president Jim McPhilliamy made it official that the team would begin play in 2015 in Memorial Stadium.

Top-ranked North Carolina took care of business Tuesday night with a 2-0 nonconference men’s soccer victory over William & Mary. North Carolina (5-1) jumped in front by scoring on its first shot, which produced Tyler Engel’s second goal of the year. Omar Holness began the scoring play with a corner kick, Andy Craven gently nudged the ball toward Engel and he deposited the ball past the Tribe goalkeeper.
