Briefs: Agassi book continues to draw interest

NEW YORK Agassi book continues to draw interest

Andre Agassi used crystal meth periodically for "a year or so," the eight-time Grand Slam champion revealed in an interview with People magazine.

In his upcoming autobiography, Agassi admits he used crystal meth in 1997 and failed a drug test - a result he says was thrown out after he lied by saying he "unwittingly" took the substance.

New excerpts published Friday reveal Agassi wore a hairpiece that nearly fell off at the 1990 French Open, became jealous during ex-wife Brooke Shields' appearance on "Friends," and how Shields put a photo of Steffi Graf - now married to Agassi - on the fridge for motivation to get in better shape before their wedding.

"It's a photo of the perfect woman, she says," Agassi wrote. "The perfect woman with the perfect legs - the legs Brooke wants." Associated press

The Williams sisters could be headed for a final matchup at the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Qatar after Venus Williams advanced to the semifinals along with Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki.

Serena Williams had already gained the semifinals.

Top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lost in the Lyon (France) Grand Prix quarterfinals, falling 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (8) to Arnaud Clement despite 27 aces.

Marat Safin advanced to his first semifinal in 23 events by beating Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-0, 7-6 (4) in the St. Petersburg Open in Russia.

Safin, the two-time champion from Russia, ranked 77th, last played in a semifinals at the Kremlin Cup a year ago.

COLLEGES

Alex Torda, Isaac Kissi and Peter Chilemena scored for Dayton (10-4-1, 5-1) in a 3-0 home shutout of No. 16 Charlotte in Atlantic 10 soccer. The 49ers' 13-game unbeaten streak ended.

GYMNASTICS

Former world champion gymnast Daiane dos Santos tested positive for Furosemide during a non-competition doping control in July. Santos' club, Pinheiros, confirmed the International Gymnastics Federation notice.

Furosemide, a weight-loss drug, can be used as a masking agent for other banned substances.
