Briefs: Henin returned for Wimbledon

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. Henin returned for Wimbledon

The moment Justine Henin realized her tennis career wasn't finished came this past June, when the Belgian watched Roger Federer finally hoist the French Open trophy, the one Grand Slam title he was missing.

His triumph reignited a passion that had been dormant inside her.

In an interview with the Associated Press at her central Florida training site Saturday, Henin said she wouldn't be returning to tennis if she didn't believe she could win Wimbledon and complete her own career grand slam - as soon as next year.

Her return to tennis has come as fast as her departure.

Henin rocked the tennis world by suddenly, stunningly walking away in May 2008, becoming the first woman to retire while ranked No. 1.

Henin said she stopped playing because she needed to realize she could do more than just play tennis. She also said she was exhausted and didn't enjoy the sport, which had consumed her life for as long as she could remember.

In Doha, Qatar, the Williams sisters will end their season with another title matchup.

Venus Williams defeated Jelena Jankovic 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 Saturday in one semifinal at the Sony Ericsson Championships. Serena Williams won the other when Caroline Wozniacki quit because of an abdominal injury while trailing 6-4, 0-1.

Serena secured the year-end No. 1 ranking this week.

Jeff Cannon scored on a header off a 25-yard free kick at 3minutes, 23seconds of the first half and Alex Moreno made three saves to give host Pheiffer a 1-0 men's soccer victory against top-ranked Lees-McRae. The Conference Carolinas upset moves the second-place Falcons (13-4, 8-2) closer to the Bobcats (14-1-1, 8-1-1) in the top spot.

A second Kansas basketball player has been given a chance to wipe his record clean of drunken-driving charges. Junior Chase Buford must pay $802 in fees. He is not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs for one year and must undergo substance abuse treatment.

Last week, teammate Brady Morningstar was placed on diversion in a drunken-driving case stemming from an Oct. 3 traffic stop. He also was suspended from playing in any games during the first semester.

Soccer

In London, Chelsea stayed at the top of the Premier League by outplaying Bolton 4-0, and Manchester United remained two points behind with a 2-0 victory over Blackburn.

In Madrid, Gonzalo Higuain scored two goals to give 10-man Real Madrid a much-needed 2-0 win over Getafe that also trimmed Barcelona's lead at the top of the Spanish league.
