The Myers Park High girls' tennis team extended its winning streak to 35 - and nearly two years - with a 6-0 rout of Skyland Roberson in the N.C. 4A quarterfinal Tuesday.
Myers Park (17-0), the reigning state champion, will play Greensboro Grimsley in the semifinal Thursday. The Mustangs ended Roberson's 17-game winning streak.
Grace Baker, Myers Park's No.1 singles player, lost the first set 6-3 to MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell, but rallied to win the second set 6-1 and the tiebreaker 10-3.
From there, Myers Park' Jessica Perez, Anna Rickenbaker, Emily Carpenter, Kelsey Sherck and Samantha Forlenza won singles matches in straight sets. The three doubles matches weren't played because the outcome had been decided.
"I was pleasantly surprised with how well we played," Myers Park coach Ed Flynn said. "(Roberson) is the defending 3A champion, so to not drop a match was a good sign for where we are. I told the team it is only going to get tougher, so to try to remember today and draw from it on Thursday."
Charlotte Catholic beat Marvin Ridge 5-1 in the 3A quarterfinals and improved to 18-4.
The Cougars' top five singles players - Julia Paulson, Ashley Verhein, Meagan Laframboise, Lucia Leahy and Mary Kathryn Ferebee - won in straight sets. Paige Nestor won at No.6 singles for Marvin Ridge (16-3).
Harding, a wild-card entry from ME-GA 7 4A, lost 5-1 to Asheville in the 3A quarterfinals.
The Rams (12-3) won playoff matches against Gastonia Forestview and Hickory St. Stephens. Asheville (15-3) will play at Charlotte Catholic in the semifinal Thursday.
Salisbury improved to 21-0 with a 7-1 victory against Shelby (13-1) in a 2A quarterfinal. The Hornets advanced to the semifinal against Maiden (20-1), which beat Brevard 5-1.
Salisbury's Hannah Lebowitz, who won the state 2A singles title, beat Shelby's Hillary Lutz 6-0, 6-1 at No.1 singles, and teamed with Anna Page in a doubles victory.
In 1A, Misenheimer Gray Stone Day (14-2) lost 6-0 to East Montgomery (16-0) in a match of Yadkin Valley teams.
Volleyball
Fort Mill Nation Ford beat Hillcrest 25-15, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16 in the S.C. 4A quarterfinal behind Sara Bebeau (17 kills, 11 digs), Caylee Antilley (eight kills, five digs), Morgan Wolf (13 digs), Ashley Grayson (seven kills) and Ally Lambert (six kills, eight digs).
Boys' Soccer
Marvin Ridge beat China Grove Carson 4-0 in the first round of the N.C. 3A playoffs on goals by Nick Cevallos, Matt Risher, Garrett Condon and Harry Hockham. Danny Cooper had the shutout for Marvin Ridge (17-1-2).
