Briefs: N.D. softball players found dead in pond

DICKINSON, N.D. Police say three missing North Dakota college softball players have been found dead in their vehicle, which was pulled from a pond northwest of Dickinson. Police Lt. Rod Banyai said Tuesday night police are "still investigating" the cause of the deaths.

Authorities have been searching since Sunday night for Kyrstin Gemar, 22, of San Diego; Afton Williamson, 20, of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; and Ashley Neufeld, 21, of Brandon, Manitoba. The Dickinson State students were last heard from in calls made to two friends on cell phones before the lines cut off. associated press

HORSE RACING

In Arcadia, Calif., Zenyatta was made the early 5-2 favorite in a field of 13 for the $5million Breeders' Cup Classic, where she'll put her 13-0 record on the line against the boys for the first time. Zenyatta will break from the No.4 post in Saturday's 11/4-mile race at Santa Anita.

COLLEGES

Charlie Reiter had three goals and an assist as Davidson won 5-2 at Campbell in men's soccer. Josh Zipin also scored for the Wildcats (11-7-0), whose first score was an own goal. Mitchell Cardenas and Justin Smith scored for Campbell (8-9-1).

SAILING

The 200-foot mast on the monster trimaran that will represent the United States in the America's Cup came tumbling down during testing on the Pacific Ocean near San Diego.

The mast is estimated to have cost $10million. The syndicate, scheduled to face defending champion Alinghi of Switzerland in a best-of-3 showdown beginning Feb.8, has two other masts.

TENNIS

Second-seed Sharon Fichman of Toronto advanced to the second round of the Rock Hill Rocks Open in Rock Hill with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory against Alexandra Mueller of Abington, Pa.

Others advancing were fourth-seed Anna Tatishvili, Jacqueline Cako, Julia Cohen, eighth-seed Sacha Jones and Grace Min.

MEDIA

CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz must pay $916,000 yearly in alimony and child support to his ex-wife and give up their Connecticut home under terms of a newly issued divorce decree.

The ruling, made Monday in Bridgeport (Conn.) Superior Court, dissolves the 26-year marriage of Nantz and Ann-Lorraine "Lorrie" Carlsen Nantz. It comes after both testified about the breakdown of their marriage; Judge Howard Owens concluded neither was at fault.

SOCCER

D.C. United said Tom Soehn has withdrawn from consideration to stay on as the team's coach after three seasons.
