Tar Heels eliminate Brown

CHAPEL HILL Billy Schuler found the back of the net to give No. 5 national seed North Carolina an early lead, and Alex Dixon added a late goal to put the match away in the Tar Heels' 2-0 win against Brown in the second round of the NCAA men's soccer championship on Sunday at Fetzer Field.

Kirk Urso assisted on both goals for the Tar Heels (14-2-3), setting up a Schuler header on a free kick in the 20th minute and feeding Dixon near midfield in the 89th.

Goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty went the distance in net for his eighth shutout and North Carolina's 10th in 19 games. He made two saves, and North Carolina held Brown (11-3-5) without a shot over the first 57 minutes and to five shots on the afternoon.

North Carolina advances to play Indiana, a 1-0 winner against No. 12 seed Butler, in the third round at 2 p.m. next Sunday in Chapel Hill.

WAKE FOREST 2, UNC WILMINGTON 1: Anthony Arena and Austin da Luz scored goals for the Deacons (14-3-3) at home against the Seahawks (14-2-5).

DUKE 2, MICHIGAN STATE 1: Andrew Wenger and Christian Ibeagha scored for the Blue Devils (14-6) in a second-round game at Michigan State. Rubin Bega scored for the Spartans (11-8-2).

PORTLAND 2, N.C. STATE 1: Ryan Luke scored off a Collen Warner assist at the 62-minute, 7-second mark to lift Portland State (12-5-5) in a second-round game at N.C. State (13-7-2).

Drew Chrostek opened the Portland State scoring off Jarad Vanschaik's assist at 1:03. Akil DeFreitas tied it for the Wolfpack off Chrystel Bakong's assist at 58:23.

MARYLAND 2, PENN STATE 1: Jason Herrick and Billy Cortes scored for the Terps (13-5-2). Brian Forgue scored for host Penn State (12-7-2).

VIRGINIA 5, BUCKNELL 0: Will Bates had three goals, Hunter Jumper had one and Tony Tchani had the other for the Cavaliers (14-3-3) at home against Bucknell (17-5). Diego Restrepo got the shutout. Virginia will play Portland next weekend in the round of 16.

BOSTON COLLEGE 1, ST. JOHN'S 0: Karl Reddick scored for the Eagles (14-8) at St. John's (9-2-9). Justin Luthy had three saves in recording the shutout.

Division II

LEES-McRAE 1, TAMPA 0: Jamie Bladen scored in the second minute and the Bobcats advanced to the NCAA tournament's final four with the home win Saturday night.

Bladen's goal came on an assists from Jamie Price, who beat a defender and laid the pass off to Bladen in the center of the field. Bladen was unchallenged and launched a 30-yard shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in.

Sean Paradise made two saves to get the shutout.

Lees-McRae (18-2-1) will make the school's first final four appearance in any sport when it faces Lewis on Thursday, Dec. 3 in Tampa, Fla.

Tampa finished 17-3-1.
