DULUTH, Ga. The Charlotte Checkers took a five-game winning streak into Saturday night, but Gwinnett wouldn't let them get their nose out front.
Pat Galivan, who took seven shots, converted on the last to decide the ECHL contest. The left wing's shot with 27 seconds left gave the Gladiators a 5-4 victory.
That ended a battle in which Charlotte wiped out one-goal deficits four times, the last at 17minutes, 47seconds of the third period by Randy Rowe.
Gwinnett, however, kept Checkers goaltender Ryan Munce busy all night, peppering him with 60 shots on goal - an average of one for every minute in the contest. Munce turned away 55 shots though to keep Charlotte in the contest.
Julien Brouillette, Kenny Roche and David Marshall also had tying goals for the Checkers, but the Gladiators kept Daniel Tkaczuk out of the goal-scoring column a two nights after he had three during a 6-3 victory. Tkaczuk did have two assists Saturday.
The teams will play a third straight game against each other when they meet at 2 p.m. today at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.
