SPARTANBURG News and Notes
With camp over, players bolt
Perhaps at no time during the entire, two-and-a-half week training camp did Carolina Panthers players move more quickly than when the whistle sounded to end Wednesday morning's 75-minute practice, which took place in a cool drizzle.
That ended training camp at Wofford (the team will finish preseason practice in Charlotte) and – led by rookie defensive back Charles Godfrey – most players sprinted up a hill toward the locker room and then on to the parking lot. Within 10 minutes, cars were leaving (wonder if they even had time for showers?). A Spartanburg police car sat at the parking lot entrance, however, a not-too subtle reminder for players who wanted to get home as quickly as possible.
This was the 14th season the Panthers have trained at Wofford, and their contract with the school ends in 2009. Coach John Fox said that although it won't be his decision, he'd prefer that camp remain in Spartanburg. The fact that owner Jerry Richardson attended Wofford probably makes that a likely proposition.
“I like the idea of camp,” said Fox. “Guys are kind of forced to be with each other and I think that's a great thing. They take great care of us here.” David scott
Briefly
Players didn't have much time at home Wednesday. Buses were to leave Bank of America Stadium at 3:45p.m. for the airport, where the team was to fly to Philadelphia ahead of today's exhibition against the Eagles. D.S.
Fox didn't rule out the possibility of rookie running back Jonathan Stewart playing tonight. The Panthers have brought him along slowly because of offseason toe surgery. Linebacker Jon Beason (ankle), who didn't play in the exhibition opener against Indianapolis, will play tonight. D.S.
