Concord Cannon basketball player Jarell Eddie verbally committed to Virginia Tech, said former Cannon coach Ron Johnson, who accepted a job this week as an assistant coach at Georgia.
Eddie, a 6-foot-6 wing player, averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds last season. Johnson said Eddie had eight college offers and chose Virginia Tech over Kentucky, Georgia and Wake Forest.
Vance basketball star Daryl Traynham, a junior guard, returned to his native Maryland for family reasons at the end of school last year, but coach Will Robinson anticipates him returning to school this month. Vance will play in the Junior Orange Bowl Christmas Tournament in Miami Dec. 27-30.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will team with the Panthers for its annual Football Mom 101 clinic Saturday at 9 a.m. at Bank of America Stadium. Local high school coaches, players and officials will teach 225 mothers of youth, middle and high school players about the game. The moms will learn about rules, equipment sportsmanship and safety.
Former West Mecklenburg basketball player Shamel Akins enrolled at United Faith Christian, West Meck coach Donald Kirby said. Akins made the move, Kirby said, because of the N.C. High School Athletic Association age requirement.
Akins will turn 19 two weeks before the October cutoff date to maintain eligibility. Kirby said Akins is being recruited by the College of Charleston, Richmond, Winston Salem State, and Penn State.
Former Butler basketball player Jordan Springer, who graduated last spring, is at the United States Military Academy prep school in Fort Monmouth, N.J., and will play for the Army Black Knights in the 2009-10 season, Bulldogs coach Kurt Wessler said. Springer averaged 12 points and eight rebounds despite missing 12 games with a back injury.
Two top recruits will join Mecklenburg County's girls' basketball scene this winter. Providence Day 5-7 freshman Tiffany Mitchell is ranked in the top 20 nationally in her age group by the College Girls Basketball Report. She's ranked No.2 in the Southeast region.
East Mecklenburg 6-3 freshman Giselle “Gigi” Bailey is ranked in the top 40 nationally and fourth in the region. She'll join a team with three starters returning from a 25-4 team.
Myers Park, Olympic, North Mecklenburg and Waddell will participate in a football scrimmage tonight at 7 at Myers Park. Admission is $3.
An N.C. football player has died after practice and officials are investigating whether he was dehydrated. Seventeen-year-old Atlas Fraley of Chapel Hill High died Tuesday.
