I have a question-and-answer blog at prepinsiders.blogspot.com, and someone asked a question I've never had: If you had to cover games at one school the rest of your career, where would it be? Well, I'd hate to choose one, with so many great schools in our area, but Charlotte Catholic has become a favorite. A big game there feels like a college bowl game. I love the fans' passion, the tailgating, how hard the team plays and how much it means to everybody. If you have a chance to go, even if you're not affiliated with either school playing, it's a great Friday night out.
Wonder when folks will start talking about Indian Trail Sun Valley as a serious state title contender? The Spartans have a great offense, a powerhouse defense and a star in receiver
Ray Ray Davis.
Best week of the season upcoming: Boiling Springs Crest at Shelby (rivalry divides Cleveland County); Charlotte Latin at Charlotte Catholic (three-time private school champ at 3AA public school state finalist); Independence at West Charlotte (Patriots coach
Tom Knotts returns to his old campus); Sun Valley at Kannapolis Brown (3AA state title favorites); Northwestern at Rock Hill (that city's best rivalry); and Clover vs. Rock Hill South Pointe (state title contenders meet in what should be a high-scoring game).
Nice bounce back from Ardrey Kell in Friday's 27-14 win against Olympic. Ardrey Kell, 9-4 last year with lots of talent back, was blown out by Mallard Creek 46-17 in its opener Aug.22. Ardrey Kell looks like it'll join a wild Southwestern 4A championship race with South Meck, Myers Park, East Meck, Independence and Butler.
And how about Hickory Ridge? The Ragin' Bulls, a second-year school, lost their first 10 games last year, before winning their season finale. Their win streak is now at four. Hickory Ridge beat Central Cabarrus on Friday to move to 3-0 (as did Mallard Creek, which was 1-10 last year).
