N.C. State' athletics fees may rise

N.C. State's fee advisory committee has recommended two increases in yearly student athletics fees, athletics director Lee Fowler said Saturday.

Last week, the committee recommended raising the debt reduction fee for athletics by $30 and the intercollegiate athletics operations fee by $16.50, Fowler said. The fees for the 2008-09 school year are $66 for debt reduction and $134 for operations.

If Chancellor James Oblinger approves of all the school's fee recommendations, he will send them to the school's board of trustees for approval. The UNC system board of governors must grant final approval to any fee increase.

Student support wasn't so great for Saturday's game. A vast area in the upper deck where students usually sit was unoccupied on homecoming.

Granted, N.C. State didn't do much to garner support the previous week, losing 41-10 in a driving rainstorm. But students missed an exciting game on a gorgeous day as the Wolfpack lost to Boston College.

Although N.C. State showed heart during its fourth-quarter comeback, there was a discouraging sign in the statistics. The Wolfpack had more kickoff return yardage (256) than yards of total offense (253). You don't win many games that way.
