Bobcats Observations | Rick Bonnell

Under NBA rules, the Bobcats have a window until Oct.31 to exercise rookie-scale options for next season on Adam Morrison and Jared Dudley or to sign Raymond Felton to a contract extension.

General manager Rod Higgins says they haven't taken any of those steps. It sounds like the team will allow Felton to become a restricted free agent at the end of this season. The front office is still deciding about Morrison's and Dudley's extensions.

Morrison would cost the team about $5.26million next season and Dudley about $1.3million.

I can see why the Bobcats are being deliberate about this; they have a new coach in Larry Brown, using eight exhibitions to assess what he has. Morrison was lost all last season to a knee injury and Dudley was the third option at small forward throughout training camp.

Brown won't waste time trimming a roster he thinks is too large at 17. He anticipates cuts early next week, after two more road exhibitions (Friday in Memphis, Tenn., and Monday in Atlanta.)

An Orlando columnist asked me before the game if the Bobcats would be interested in trading for J.J. Redick. I assured him the last thing Brown was looking for was another jump shooter.
