May blames poor defense on lack of conditioning

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Sean May isn't deluding himself.

He knows he's still deficient in the conditioning he needs to start for the Charlotte Bobcats. He knows his defense was awful in a 118-80 exhibition loss to the Orlando Magic Wednesday.

He promises, with a little time, this will improve.

“I know I've got to get in better shape. If I'm not in shape, then I'm letting down my teammates,'' May said post-game Wednesday. “I've got to get better (defensively) so they don't have to help me so much.

“(Wednesday night) was terrible, but that's why it's the preseason. You go through things like this and work them out. But personally, I know I've got to do a better job.''

Certainly May wasn't alone in playing poorly against the Magic. But in about 181/2 minutes, he shot 2-of-8 and had twice as many fouls (four) as rebounds (two). It was clear he couldn't stay with a quick, athletic forward like Orlando's Rashard Lewis (17 points on 5-of-8 shooting).

“It's going to take me time to get the feel for matchups and guy's tendencies,'' May said. “But I know I've got to do a better job.''

SOME CHAOS: Coach Larry Brown said he flooded the players with new plays, defensive principles and terminology in training camp. That was obvious from the Bobcats' 28 percent shooting in their preseason opener against the Magic.

“Everybody is still figuring out where to screen, where to pass the ball, and then the timing's off,'' said shooting guard Matt Carroll. “If someone doesn't know the play, then it all breaks down.''
