United Faith boys' guard Miller commits to Florida State

United Faith Christian junior basketball player Ian Miller has verbally committed to Florida State, his mother, Cheryl Miller said.

Miller, a 6-3, 190-pound combo guard, averaged 25 points per game as a sophomore at South Mecklenburg last season. He was named to the All-Charlotte Observer team before transferring to United Faith over the summer.

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton coached Miller's father, Julian Miller, at Austin Peay during the early '70s.

“Academically he looked at their curriculum for athletes and he thought it was top of the line,” Cheryl Miller said of her son. “He liked atmosphere, the people, the coaching staff and the environment.”

National recruiting analyst Dave Telep of scout.com ranks Miller 56th in the nation among juniors and fourth in North Carolina behind Kinston's Reggie Bullock, a 6-6 forward; Winston-Salem Mount Tabor's C.J. Leslie, a 6-3 point guard; and Concord Cannon's Jarell Eddie, a 6-7 wing.

“Florida State is getting a guy who can flat out score,” Telep said. “He's developed into a really strong scoring combo guard who may have a chance to steal some legitimate minutes at the point. This is a guy who keeps getting better. That's a big pickup for Florida State to go into North Carolina and dig him out.”

N.C.-S.C. Shrine Bowl rosters

to be released Thursday

Shrine Bowl coaches from North and South Carolina selected their teams over the weekend. Those selections have been sent to the N.C. and S.C. high school associations to verify eligibility. The 44-man teams will be announced at goupstate.com Thursday at 1p.m.

The Week's Best

HICKORY (22-5) AT NORTH IREDELL (24-0), 3A volleyball, tonight, 6: Hickory is led by seniors Anna Hilton, Meagan Meade, Heather Brown and Katie Johnston and has made the regional championship for the first time. North Iredell hasn't lost a game in the playoffs and tonight, coach Natalie Tribble – whose team is also in the state semis for the first time – will coach against a former player, Hickory coach Jonna Ramsey.

BIG FRIDAY FOOTBALL: In Mecklenburg County, it's the best week of the year. West Charlotte will be at unbeaten Mallard Creek for the ME-CA 7 4A championship. Charlotte Latin will be at Charlotte Country Day, possibly deciding the CISAA championship. If Country Day wins, it's champion. And East Mecklenburg needs to upset Sweet 16 No.1 Independence to keep its Southwestern 4A hopes alive. The Eagles need to beat the Patriots and hope Independence beats Butler next week.
