Myers Park soccer observations

Myers Park's playoff soccer run might have suffered a big blow when senior starter BrendenKelly apparently banged his head against the ground while diving for a header. He was taken to the hospital and treated for a concussion and possible broken arm.

Alexander Central sophomore forward Jeremy Whisnant played Saturday, just one week after his father died after a 31/2-year battle with cancer. The team attended the funeral Monday, practiced Tuesday and won a first-round game, 3-2 against East Gaston. Whisnant had two assists against East Gaston.

There are 10 seniors on this Mustangs' team and half are stalwarts. But among next year's returnees, freshman twins Eric and Diego Suarez are going to be special. Eric could've had five goals Saturday.

Alexander Central goalie Jonathan Elder was impressive in the first half as Myers Park peppered him with 18 shots. He had six saves. Ben Moose replaced him in the second half and had four more.
