J. C. Smith coach leaves

McNeill, whose team finished 3-7 this season, had been Bulls coach since 2004.

Johnson C. Smith's Daryl McNeill will no longer serve as the university's football coach effective immediately, the school announced Thursday.

McNeill, who also served as the associate athletics director, completed his fourth season with a 3-7 overall record, 2-5 in the CIAA.

He assumed the head coaching position in December 2004, which was the second time he served as Smith coach.

FEWER BLACK COACHES: Days after the election of the country's first black president, a study shows the number of African American coaches in major college football is the lowest in 15 years.

With the recent dismissals of Ty Willingham at Washington and Ron Prince at Kansas State, the number of black coaches in the 119-school NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision was reduced to four.

In 1997, there were eight black head coaches, the most in history.

The study was conducted by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.

FLORIDA STATE: Coach Bobby Bowden said receivers Bert Reed and Jarmon Fortson and linebacker Nigel Carr would be suspended Saturday for the game against Clemson for “not meeting their responsibilities.”
