MEMPHIS, Tenn. Former Duke basketball player Elliot Williams says he's considering a transfer to Memphis, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Kentucky.

Williams, a rising sophomore guard, was granted his release Wednesday from Duke.

He told The Commercial Appeal on Thursday that, because of his mother's illness, he is seeking a waiver of the NCAA rule forcing student-athletes to sit out a year after transferring.

Williams said he's considering the four schools because he's familiar with them and because they are closer to his home in Memphis.

“That's what we're trying to do. I'm trying to play next year, and I hope that (the NCAA) understands that I'm trying to come closer to home to be with my family,” Williams said.

He started 11 of the Blue Devils' final 12 games as a freshman last season. Associated Press

South Carolina athletics director Eric Hyman received a five-year contract extension, tying him to Gamecocks sports until 2015.

Track and field

Michael Rodgers won the men's 100-meter U.S. championship in Eugene, Ore., defeating Darvis Patton by one-hundredth of a second.

Rodgers, the 2008 indoor national champion at 60 meters, finished in 9.91 seconds to take the title in a field missing Tyson Gay. Monzavous Edwards finished third.

In the women's 100 meters, Carmelita Jeter defeated Muna Lee by one-thousandth of a second to win the U.S. title. Jeter out-leaned Lee at the line in sprint to finish in 10.776 seconds and win her first national title. Lauryn Williams finished third.

NFL

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has started his review of former New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress' shooting incident under the league's personal conduct policy.

The league confirmed Goodell was examining the incident in which Burress shot himself in the thigh in late November at a New York City nightclub. The commissioner could suspend him if he finds Burress violated the NFL policy on personal conduct.

Former Cleveland Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius sued the team and the Cleveland Clinic, saying the team misrepresented the cleanliness of its training facility and blaming doctors with negligence over a staph infection in his right knee that kept him from playing last year.

WNBA

Katie Douglas scored all of her 28 points after halftime, and Ebony Hoffman hit two free throws with 4.8 seconds left in overtime to lift the Indiana Fever to an 82-81 victory over the New York Liberty (2-5). Indiana (5-2) rallied from a 17-point deficit late in the third quarter and won its fifth straight.

Chamique Holdsclaw scored 28 points to help the host Atlanta Dream beat the Detroit Shock 96-86. The Dream (4-4) snapped a two-game losing streak and matched its win total from last season, when it set a league record with 30 losses. Rookie Shavonte Zellous scored 25 points for the Shock (1-5).

Becky Hammon scored 26 to lead the San Antonio Silver Stars (3-3) to their fifth straight win at home against Sacramento, beating the Monarchs 62-52. DeMya Walker led the Monarchs (1-6) with 12 points.
