Sherrill's title run continues for 20th year

Alexander Central adds Northwestern 4A to conference crowns

Alexander Central won the school's 25th softball conference championship last week, the Northwestern 4A. It was its 18th in 20 years and the 20th straight title for coach Monte Sherrill, who returned to the school this season.

Sherrill, who was at Central Cabarrus last year, hasn't lost a regular-season conferencegame since April 1, 1996.

Alexander Central (20-2) will host defending N.C. 3A champion Southwest Randolph at 7 p.m. Friday.

Eligibility rules on the N.C. table

The N.C. High School Athletic Association Board of Directors is expected to approve recommendations today to emphasize educating coaches on eligibility rules and to increase penalties for players who willfully falsify eligibility documents.The NCHSAA's Policy Committee developed six recommendations Tuesday:

1. Coaches' education; 2. Player education; 3. Guidance counselor and principal awareness; 4. An NCHSAA-developed checklist on eligibility; 5. Raising the penalty to 365-day ineligibility for willfully falsifying documents; 6. Providing each team in the conference with a team roster and the players' home addresses. Baseball

• Mount Pleasant's baseball team beat West Stanly 3-2 Friday to earn a share of the Rocky River 2A championship with West Stanly. The league tournament will begin Tuesday.

• Hopewell's baseball team (19-3, 8-2) will play at North Mecklenburg on Friday in a game that could determine the ME-CA 7 4A champion. The Titans raised $3,000 in last week's "Strikeouts For Troops" promotion to benefit injured U.S. troops returning from Iraq.

• Metrolina Christian baseball player Tyler Myatt hits .480 with nine homers and 24 RBIs. Pitcher Brantley Hattrich has a 1.00 ERA.

Basketball

• Central Cabarrus guard Ashton Ford, who averaged 18.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists, has signed with Louisburg. He was an all-ME-CA 7 4A selection. Teammate T.J. Resper, a 5-9 guard who averaged 14.3 points and 3.3 assists, signed with North Greenville.• Charlotte Christian junior Willis Hall has received a basketball scholarship offer from College of Charleston, coach Shonn Brown said. Hall, a 6-6 forward, also has offers from Gardner-Webb, Virginia Military and Liberty, Brown said.

• Charlotte Latin girls' basketball player Brittany Brown signed with Presbyterian. Brown was a three-time all-CISAA pick.

• Hickory Grove basketball player Lee Branscome signed with Chowan. He averaged 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds last season.

• Olympic High basketball players Joe Cuello and Devin Hill signed with Caldwell Community College. Cuello averaged 11.5 points last season. Hill averaged 5.6 points and 4.1 assists.

Soccer

• Charlotte Latin's girls' soccer team will visit Charlotte Country Day at 7 Friday night in a game that likely will determine the CISAA regular-season champion. Latin (10-3-1), ranked No. 2 in the state coaches' poll, was 3-0 in league play heading into Tuesday's game with Providence Day.

No. 11 Country Day (6-2-4) was 2-1 in league play heading into Tuesday's game with Charlotte Christian.

Country Day is led by Katie Plyler and Caroline Early. Plyler will play soccer at North Carolina next season. Early will play field hockey for the Tar Heels.

Through Monday, Latin had scored 43 goals and allowed 13. The Hawks also had six shutouts.

• The ME-CA 7 4A girls' soccer race is tight. Hopewell (7-2-1), which played Tuesday at Vance, was tied with Mallard Creek for second place behind North Meck (7-1-1). Hopewell will host North Meck on Thursday.
