Blue Devils No. 1 seed in lacrosse

Matt Danowski shouldn't be preparing for another run at the national championship. His record-setting career appeared over a year ago when the Duke men's lacrosse team's season of redemption came up a win shy of a national championship.

Yet the reigning national player of the year -- who crouched to the turf and couldn't fight back the tears when Duke's 2007 season ended -- will suit up today along with Dan Loftus, Tony McDevitt, Nick O'Hara and Michael Ward to open the NCAA tournament. It's the moment they've waited for since returning for a rare NCAA-granted fifth year that restored the season lost after three teammates were falsely accused of rape in 2006.

The Blue Devils (16-1) are the No. 1 seed in this year's tournament and will host Loyola of Maryland, the team of formerly charged and now-exonerated ex-teammate Collin Finnerty. Game time is 2:30 p.m. -- associated press

• Top seed Massachusetts (38-11) defeated host Charlotte 5-4 in nine innings on the third day of the Atlantic 10 softball tournament. Cee Brooks led the 49ers (34-30), seeded third, with three hits and an RBI.

Charlotte will play Fordham in an elimination game at 10 a.m. today.

• St. John's basketball coach Norm Roberts agreed to a renewal of his five-year rollover contract, a move school officials had indicated they were going to make toward the end of the season when there was conjecture about his job security.

• St. Bonaventure forward Matt Morgan, a two-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week last season, and freshman guard Hillary Haley said they're transferring from the basketball program.

• Missouri forward Leo Lyons, who led the Big 12 in field goal percentage, withdrew from the NBA draft and said he would return for his senior season.

• Florida football player Jamar Hornsby, 21, was arrested in Alachua County for allegedly using the credit card of a person who has been dead for almost seven months. Coach Urban Meyer released Hornsby from the team.

In brief

After reaching his second semifinal in two weeks, Wawrinka next will face No. 6 Andy Roddick or No. 14 Tommy Robredo.

Federer was beaten for the sixth time this year. The top-ranked Swiss player lost nine matches in all of 2007. He piled up a string of losses when he was battling mononucleosis.

• Serena Williams' 17-match win streak ended with a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5) loss to Dinara Safina at the German Open quarterfinals in Berlin. Safina upset top-ranked Justine Henin a day earlier.

• Henin withdrew from next week's Italian Open, citing fatigue, and the WTA Tour said she will be fined $20,000 for the late withdrawal.

TRACK AND FIELD:Allyson Felix dominated the sprints at the Doha (Qatar) Super Grand Prix, breaking 11 seconds in the 100 meters for the first time and also winning the 400.

American David Oliver won the 110-meter hurdles in 12.95 seconds, 0.07 off the world record held by China's Liu Xiang and the eighth-best time in history. Oliver bettered his personal best by a whopping 0.13.

Felix ran a personal-best 10.93 seconds in the 100. Then she took the 400 in 49.83, the first time a woman had broken the 50-second mark this season.
