49ers sweep Richmond

He strikes out 7, allows 1 hit in relief for No. 2 Tar Heels

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --

Former Independence High star Aaron Bray stole home to break open a 4-4 tie in the sixth and the Charlotte 49ers (37-13, 17-7 Atlantic 10) added five unanswered runs to beat Richmond 10-4 and complete the weekend sweep of the Spiders (19-28-2, 9-14-1).

Chris Taylor, who starred at Mount Pleasant, scored the first run of the game with a solo homer to left center, his team and conference-leading 17th of the season. He also leads the team and league with 64 RBIs.

No. 2 NORTH CAROLINA 5, VIRGINIA 2: Rob Wooten (4-1) struck out a career-high seven batters and allowed one hit over a career-long 42/3 scoreless innings of relief, helping the Tar Heels (42-8, 20-5 ACC) at Virginia (33-17, 13-13).

Kyle Shelton, who starred at South Mecklenburg, homered and tripled, and Kyle Seager (Northwest Cabarrus) added a double, a triple and scored two runs for North Carolina.

No. 11 GEORGIA 4, No. 18 VANDERBILT 2: Rich Poythress' RBI double in the top of the 10th inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Bulldogs (32-17-1, 18-7-1 SEC) scored two runs in the ninth and two more in the 10th to beat host Vanderbilt (37-14, 15-10).

ARKANSAS 6, No. 17 SOUTH CAROLINA 3: The host Razorbacks (30-20, 12-13 SEC) scored four in the seventh to upset the Gamecocks (34-17, 13-13).

MARYLAND 6-1, No. 19 N.C. STATE 2-12: Jake Buchanan tossed a complete-game five-hitter and Jeremy Synan and Nick Stanley belted three-run home runs as the Wolfpack (34-16, 16-9 ACC) won the second game of a doubleheader at Maryland (29-25, 9-20).

No. 23 KENTUCKY 5, TENNESSEE 2: Aaron Lovett came on in relief of starter James Paxton in the third and worked six innings allowing two runs to help the Wildcats (37-14, 13-13 SEC) at Tennessee (25-26, 11-15).

No. 24 COASTAL CAROLINA 17, HIGH POINT 8: The host Chanticleers (40-11, 14-3, Big South) hit five home runs, three by David Anderson, to rout High Point (18-29, 8-9 Big South).

GEORGIA TECH 7, CLEMSON 1: Eddie Burns pitched eight strong innings and Jeff Rowland and Luke Murton each had two RBIs to lead the host Yellow Jackets (36-14, 14-12 ACC) against Clemson (25-25, 10-18).

WAKE FOREST 3, DUKE 1: Willy Fox's two-run homer in the third broke a 1-1 tie, lifting host Wake (21-27, 10-15 ACC) past Duke (34-16-1, 8-16-1).

APPALACHIAN STATE 14, FURMAN 3: David Towarnicky went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs to propel the host Mountaineers (28-23, 12-11 Southern) against Furman (29-19, 15-8).

NORFOLK STATE 9, GARDNER-WEBB 5: Brad Stephenson hit a grand slam and John Boyd III homered on the next pitch in the fifth for Norfolk State (21-20). The Spartans added two in the ninth to secure the win at Gardner-Webb (23-26).
