Avery Mitchell, who recently took the top job at Albemarle Road Middle School, was named Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' principal of the year today.
The district held a surprise ceremony at her school to honor her selection as Wachovia Principal of the Year for 2010. Mitchell, a former math teacher, has worked for CMS since she graduated from N.C. State University in 1992.
She was principal of Crestdale Middle for four years; during that time the southeast Charlotte school was named a national “School to Watch,” an honor recognizing academic accomplishments in middle schools.
In March, Superintendent Peter Gorman tapped her for his “strategic staffing” program. She was among seven principals transferred into low-scoring schools with a three-year mandate to make big academic gains.
Mitchell is also among nine CMS principals mentoring “principal residents” hired through the New Leaders for New Schools program. The New York-based program which recruits and trains people interested in breaking the cycle of failure that often occurs in high-poverty urban schools.
Mitchell will now compete with other district principals of the year in the southwest region of the state.
