Tuesday TV

Opportunity Knocks

AIRS: 8 p.m. Tuesdays, ABC, Channel 9. Debuts Sept. 23.

IT'S ABOUT: You get a knock on your door, and suddenly (riiiiight) you're the subject of a trivia game show about your own life and family. And they set up a giant stage in your neighborhood, and everyone gets to come (and stomp on your neighbors' lawns, so that's popular).

HOST: J.D. Roth, a game show producer of “The Biggest Loser,” “Beauty and the Geek,” “The Pick Up Artist” and a long string of shows you've never heard of.

WASHBURN'S TAKE: Unpreviewed. Might be worth a peek by fans of “Extreme Makeover.”

90210

AIRS: 8 p.m. Tuesdays, CW, Channel 46. Debuted Tuesday.

IT'S ABOUT: Renewing the “Beverly Hills, 90210” franchise, the new “90210” returns to West Beverly Hills High School with a new brother-sister team who learn they can get run down by living in the fast lane.

STARRING: Shenae Grimes, Tristan Wilds, Rob Estes, Lori Loughlin, Jessica Walter, Ryan Eggold, and original “Beverly Hills, 90210” cast members Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth.

WASHBURN'S TAKE: Unbelievable plots, like the original. But still feels like an inferior “Gossip Girl.”

The Mentalist

AIRS: 9 p.m. Tuesdays, CBS, Channel 3. Debuts Sept. 23.

IT'S ABOUT: Highly observant freelance detective is mistaken – or is he? – for a clairvoyant. His boss doesn't think he's got anything special, but then, he does solve hard cases.

STARRING: Simon Baker, Robin Tunney, Tim Kang, Owain Yeoman, Amanda Righetti.

WASHBURN'S TAKE: Complex, yet intriguing.

Privileged

AIRS: 9 p.m. Tuesdays, CW, Channel 46. Debuts Tuesday.

IT'S ABOUT: Bright and engaging woman, a failure at journalism, is hired as a tutor to get a rich, cosmetic company owner's self-absorbed teen daughters into Duke for college. But the daughters live on Palm Beach and would rather live the unexamined life and knife the tutor in the back.

STARRING: Allan Louis, Anne Archer, Ashley Newbrough, Brian Hallisay, Joanna Garcia, Kristina Apgar, Lucy Kate Hale, Michael Cassidy.

WASHBURN'S TAKE: Highly layered and – as teen-angst dramas go – quite promising. Mean, very mean.

Fringe

AIRS: 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Fox, Channel 18. Debuts Tuesday.

IT'S ABOUT: Big, evil corporation is taking over the world via one fiendish techo-plot after another. Innocent FBI agent is sent to crack the case.

STARRING: Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Lance Reddick, Kirk Acevedo, Mark Valley, Blair Brown, Jasika Nicole.

WASHBURN'S TAKE: Complex and dazzling. Fans of “The X Files” and “24” take note.
