Julia Louis-Dreyfus was part of one of television's most-acclaimed ensembles, working alongside Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards on “Seinfeld.” Her current series, “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” is in its fourth season on CBS and also features a strong ensemble cast. Below, Louis-Dreyfus chooses her favorite television ensembles.
‘Monty Python's Flying Circus' (1969-74)
Consisting of John Cleese, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and Carol Cleveland, the British sketch-comedy troupe created many memorable characters. Louis-Dreyfus says she admires the cast because “they were capable of doing anything, and that as a viewer, you really wanted to be with them.”
‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show' (1970-77)
This comedy series featured Mary Tyler Moore as a single woman working in a newsroom. Her co-workers were played by Ed Asner, Ted Knight, Gavin MacLeod and Betty White, and her friends were played by Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman. “The individual characters were so strong that each could carry a storyline,” says Louis-Dreyfus.
‘All in the Family' (1971-79)
The series, starring Carroll O'Connor as Queens, N.Y., bigot Archie Bunker, and Jean Stapleton as his wife, Edith, addressed intolerance with humor, but never lost sight of the characters, Louis-Dreyfus says. The show co-starred Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers.
‘Everybody Loves Raymond' (1996-2005)
Featuring comic Ray Romano as the title character and Patricia Heaton as his wife, this sitcom explored the family life of a Long Island sportswriter. It co-starred Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle and Brad Garrett. “Everybody in that show was hilarious,” Louis-Dreyfus says.
‘The Office' 2001-03 (U.K.), 2005-present (U.S.)
The British version of this sitcom starred creator Ricky Gervais as a midlevel manager, and the American version features Steve Carell in a similar role, with the location switched from Slough, England, to Scranton, Pa. “Both the British and the American version have tremendous ensembles,” Louis-Dreyfus says.
