Observer veterans will help fill a void

It's time to officially say farewell to Richard Maschal.

The last of the articles left behind by our former visual arts writer, an Observer veteran of 40 years, appears today in this section: His preview of the American Craft Council Show at the Charlotte Convention Center is on Page 15.

Who will fill the void Richard left behind? An experienced team of veterans, under my direction.

There's Observer columnist Mark Washburn, who is now also covering museums. There's arts writer Steven Brown, who wrote just this week about James Rosati's 22,000-pound steel sculpture, which has a new home on the campus of Queens University of Charlotte.

And there's Linda Luise Brown, who has 25 years' experience as a professional artist and who's written frequently about visual arts for the Observer's SouthPark magazine. In next week's CLT, look for her preview of the November gallery crawl.

If you have thoughts about our visual arts coverage for me or for any of these key players, e-mail tjanes@ charlotte observer.com.
