Patron of the arts

You can often find Marie Mitchell volunteering as an usher at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Sometimes she has helped usher those same performances into being. Each season, Mitchell sponsors a dance work for N.C. Dance Theatre. She also supports the Charlotte Symphony, Opera Carolina and other groups, and Theatre Charlotte just made her a lifetime member in honor of her contributions.

Hometown: Charlotte.

Before Blumenthal: For decades, Mitchell and her late brother owned Michel's, a tobacco and gift shop on the same block - on Trade Street - where Bank of America's home office now stands.

On philanthropy: "I'm not going to be able to take it with me. I'm able to do it, because I've been fortunate - more so than a lot of people today. ... I like to help people while I'm here on this earth."
