What: Modern colorful jewelry made with metals, wood and resin, using a variety of processes with which Rosa Murillo experiments.

Who: Murillo has been surrounded by art her whole life and says she’s been inspired by relatives who are accomplished painters, sculptors and symphony musicians. Originally from Mexico, she lives in Huntersville with her husband, Ruben Lopez, and their three children. She has a bachelor's degree in architecture.

What sets them apart: Murillo uses metalsmithing, woodworking and color illustration to make the jewelry.

Favorite piece: According to Murillo, each piece has a story to tell that makes it special. “Oftentimes, I send handwritten notes to our customers when we ship them their orders, explaining the inspiration and emotion I felt when creating a piece.”

Working together: Murillo and Lopez run Muro Jewelry together. It took time to develop a working style that incorporated her creative free spirit and Lopez’s chemical engineer background, she says. We now have meetings almost every day, discuss what is in our calendars and go about our work. We consult each other on business and family decisions and sometimes we take one- or two-minute vacations!”
