Reading Matters

Phillip Lewis’s debut novel set in places we know and love

A very nice person gave me a Christmas present in the form of an advanced reading copy of a local author’s novel. The novel is“The Barrowfields,” and the author is Phillip Lewis, with the Charlotte law firm of Horack, Talley, Pharr & Lowndes.

The book is being published by Hogarth Press of New York and London, a division of Crown Publishers.

I’m flipping through now and finding references to things I know: Chapel Hill, Rosemary Street, Crook’s Corner and its shrimp and grits, Raleigh, Charlotte. Doc Watson. Even a Charlotte person’s name I recognize – but I’ll leave that for you to discover.

On the back, a blurb from novelist Ron Rash. He calls “The Barrowfields” “beautifully written and deeply moving.”

Lewis will be one of two speakers at the Queens Book & Author Event in early March. Tickets go on sale Feb. 15.
