Ed Tarkington’s novel of love and loss

Furman graduate Ed Tarkington will read and sign copies of his new novel, “Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” at 7 p.m. Thursday at Park Road Books.

It’s a wonderful novel of love and loss, inspired by the Neill Young song of the same title.

In an interview with Salon Magazine, Tarkington said he’d spent seven years writing another novel before this one, one he had great hopes for but which hadn’t sold.

“I was getting kind of worried that maybe this dream wasn’t going to come true after I’d put so much effort and so many years into trying to mature as a writer and really do this thing. So when I started this second book, I thought, this is it. I’m going to take a real hard shot at this one more time. When I was younger, I used to feel like I needed to ‘save up’ ideas for later. But it finally hit me that this is later. It’s time. I wanted to throw everything in there.”

And throw he did. Murder. Betrayal. Love. The Works.

Park Road Books is at 4139 Park Road, Park Road Shopping Center, Charlotte.

The event is free, and you’re invited.
