Novel explores first love, race relations

Novelist Ron Rash calls Danny Johnson “an exciting voice in Southern literature.”

Johnson’s “The Last Road Home” is his debut, coming-of-age novel, set in North Carolina in the 1950s and 1960s. Raeford “Junebug” Hurley at eight has known his share of hard lessons. After his parents’ sudden death, he must live with his grandparents on a tobacco farm surrounded by fields and lonesome woods.

Johnson explores race relations and first love and delves deep into “the gritty, violent realities of the South’s turbulent past.”

You can hear Johnson read from his nove at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Park Road Books, Park Road Shopping Center, Charlotte.

The event is free, and you’re invited.
