Get old school this weekend: Alpaca celebration wood-carving festival


Carolina Alpaca Celebration

Sat 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun 8 a.m. -4 p.m. Cabarrus Arena and Events Center, 4751 NC Hwy 49 North, Concord.

Carolina Alpaca Celebration will showcase more than 600 alpacas competing for ribbons in the show ring. Alpacas are animals originating in South America that resemble small llamas. There will also be kids’ activities, free educational seminars and yarn spinning demonstrations. Vendors will showcase their wares, including clothes made of alpaca fleece and books about alpacas. There’s a charge for parking.


Arts at the Abbey: Cecelia Ensemble

The Cecilia Ensemble, a group of professional singers from South Carolina, will perform an all-English program. Included will be William Byrd’s Mass for four voices, English anthems and motets, James Macmillan’s Cantos Sagrados and Benjamin Britten’s Five Flower Songs. The ensemble is directed by Joel Scraper. Admission to all Abbey concerts is free. Donations are gladly accepted.

Krispy Kreme is celebrating the opening of its 1,000th shop by giving customers at all participating stores a free Original Glazed doughnut on Tuesday. No purchase is required, and neither is a coupon. One per customer, while supplies last.


2015 Showcase of Woodcarvings

Sat Noon-4 p.m.; Sun 10 a.m.-3:30pm. Marion Diehl Rec Center, 2219 Tyvola Road.

Showcase of Woodcarvings is the largest woodcarvings show in the southeast. This year the theme is “The Circus.” There will be a carving competition, carvings and carving supplies for sale, raffle items, a silent auction and mini-seminars.
