Jody Mace: On the Cheap

Get a dose of snow this weekend

Baxter Village Winter Fest

Sat Noon-5 p.m. Market Street in Baxter Village, Fort Mill, S.C.

The forecast this weekend is for snow ... in Fort Mill anyway. Zippy Ice of Charlotte will create several tons of snow for a 100-foot-long sledding hill. In addition, there will be Santa and his elves, hayrides, an obstacle course, inflatables, strolling carolers and s’mores.

Center City Concerts

Mon Noon. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 115 W. Seventh St.

This free lunchtime concert series continues with “A Choral Christmas at St. Peters.” Robert Burlington, director of music at The Cannon School and bass section leader in St. Peter’s choir, will conduct. In the finest tradition of Christmas celebrations, the audience will be invited to sing along on well-known carols.

Charlotte Music Club

Sun 3 p.m. First United Methodist Church, 501 N. Tryon St.

The Charlotte Music Club will perform its 62nd annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah” Part 1. This free performance includes soloists, orchestra, harpsichord and a chorus of 65 local volunteer singers. Conducted by Ginger Wyrick.

Fifth Annual Latke Festival

Fri 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Atherton Mill and Market, 2104 South Blvd.

Watch how traditional and not-so-traditional latkes are prepared. These potato pancakes are a Hanukkah delicacy. You will even get to eat free latkes. Among the variations: Cajun, Tex-Mex, curried, gluten-free, chocolate and vegan.

NoDa Tree Lighting

Sun 6 p.m. Johnston YMCA, 3025 N. Davidson St.

As the NoDa Christmas tree is lighted, enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, Christmas crafts and carols. Watch for Santa, too.

Menorah Lighting at SouthPark

Tues 5 p.m. Circle Court at SouthPark mall.

Chabad’s Hanukkah celebration will include a menorah lighting, Hanukkah treats, face-painting, music and children’s entertainment. There will even be a Hanukkah magic show.
