Vice Principals (10:30 p.m., HBO) – In this new comedy series, the principal of a South Carolina high school (Bill Murray, one episode only) retires and his two vice principals – played by Danny McBride (“Eastbound & Down”) and Walton Goggins (“Justified”) – vow a fight to the death for the job. When they are passed over in favor of a supremely more qualified candidate – an African American woman from Philadelphia – the two enemies join forces to bring her down. The show is silly, profane and occasionally very funny. But as it progresses, there’s a mean-spirited darkness that tends to depress more often than it delights. Is there a reason to watch? Certainly. That reason is Walton Goggins, as usual.
