Media Movers: Rice to flash between Indy, Coca-Cola 600

Doug Rice, president of the Concord-based Performance Racing Network, will be working a long shift Sunday – in two time zones. He’ll be the first race broadcaster to pull off the “double,” working at the Indianapolis 500 as a pit reporter for IMS Radio Network, then catching a charter flight back to Concord to call the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway with Mark Garrow and Wendy Venturi. Rice has been trying to work it out for years, and a friend at Shell Oil Co. called this year to say he could hitch a ride with a group of journalists on the company’s charter. “I should be back before the green flag falls for the 600,” Rice says. “Only thing I’m worried about is the weather.” Long-range forecasts are looking good. …

Anna Douglas of the Herald of Rock Hill is named winner of the Charlotte Society of Professional Journalists’ Outstanding Journalism Award for her work on the downfall of Winthrop University’s president. Douglas is having a breakout year – earlier she was named reporter of the year by the S.C. Press Association. Other finalists in the SPJ contest were documentary producer Bruce Bowers, writer Emily Harris and Shawn Flynn of Time Warner Cable News. …

Joining WCNC (Channel 36) as morning traffic reporter and noon anchor is Brooke Katz, who joins the station from the ABC affiliate in Louisville, Ky. … Casey Wood departs as a morning reporter at WSOC (Channel 9) less than a month after arriving from the CBS affiliate station in Waco, Texas. … Kristine and Jeff Zell – she does mornings and he does sports on WCCB (Channel 18) – are expecting a baby in October. …

Lee James, president and chief creative officer of the ad agency Mythic, will be honored by American Advertising Federation Charlotte’s Silver Medal Award June 11. … Appalachian State University play-by-play announcer David Jackson hosts a new show, “Sports Brunch,” 11 a.m. Sundays on WZGV-AM (ESPN 730) about local sports teams.
